Welcome to Latvia!

Visit medieval towns (www.cesis.lv) and country castles (www.turaida-muzejs.lv) go boating down tree–fringed rivers; laze on empty beaches; see beavers, otters and seals or birds (www.putni.lv) in the wild; bike along quiet rural roads. Formerly part of the Soviet Union, Latvia declared itself independent in 1991. But for all its economic transformation it remains a quiet haven with broad forests, hidden villages and more than 12,000 rivers and 3,000 lakes. Riga (www.riga.lv), the bustling capital, boasts the historic centre of Vecriga as well as a lively market and good restaurants and nightlife (www.liveriga.lv). Nearby are the seaside resorts of Jurmala (www.jurmala.lv), where sand dunes and unspoilt at least 500km long shores are offset by woodland. The west features the picturesque town of Kuldiga (www.kuldiga.lv}, set on the banks of the Venta River. To the north is the Gauja National Park (www.gnp.lv) and a countryside speckled with castles and caves. In the south, the town of Bauska features an intriguing ancient castle and provides access to the Baroque majesty of Rundale Palace (www.rundale.net). Latvia's hostels are convenient gateways for exploring this emerging tourism destination.
