Formerly part of the Soviet Union, Latvia declared itself independent in 1991. To the north is the Gauja National Park (www.gnp.lv) and a countryside speckled with castles and caves. In the south, the town of Bauska features an intriguing ancient castle and provides access to the Baroque majesty of Rundale Palace (www.rundale.net).
